Each year, enthusiastic fans flock in numbers to see their favorite rugby players and teams battle it out in various prestigious, global rugby tournaments. Rugby, a gentlemans game, and by far one of the fastest growing sports originated in the U.K. It is a game that has really evolved to become a professional sport. Upcoming players are usually filled with aspirations of joining the skilled professional players in the various competitive leagues that they play in. Initially, the game was not governed by so many rules.
This resulted to players being victims of serious injuries. As to reduce injuries and make the game more enjoyable, rules were set up and agreed upon by the players.
Discipline is one of the most imperative qualities that a rugby player must possess. Judging by the success of the sport and its growing popularity, we wouldn’t be wrong to say that the players have been disciplined all through. Gentlemen are disciplined and this strong discipline in the players clearly points out the gentleman qualities in them.
To the average person, rugby may be depicted as a primitive sport that entertains grown men to run about in small shorts and inflict physical damage on each other. This is not and has never been the case. Before passing such harsh judgment to this honorable sport, put in mind that the players have to abide by set rules. By doing so, the sport becomes very organized and safe for all players.
Rugby, a gentlemans game also requires strong character. Players are not expected to bring emotions in the game. It takes strong character to engage in such physical battle and still shake hands after the game. Sometimes players may have their own personal differences and still manage to maintain professionalism, so to speak, in the game.
It isn’t uncommon to see rugby players from opposing or teams having a decent informal conversation after the game. Such qualities can only be found in gentlemen. Rugby moulds a player to become more than just a rugby player but a peace loving person. As a result, rugby players are one of the calmest and most collected people you can come across. Despite their brute strength and energy in the pitch, they don’t engage in physical confrontations outside the pitch. Instead they have more sophisticated and accepted ways of solving disputes. It takes a gentleman to identify another gentleman and if you are keen to observe, most rugby players keep in the vicinity of well mannered social groupings. They bear no reservations for uncouth behavior.
Another quality that a gentleman must possess is pure bravery. Rugby, a gentlemans game is no game for the faint hearted. It needs pure bravery to risk it all in that pitch considering the harsh physical battles usually faced in the game. If you take a look into their personal lives, you will find out that they also have many responsibilities that require them to be in good shape in order for them to carry out. They stand to lose a lot incase the severe one of their limbs or have serious injuries. However, this does not seem to hold them back, on the contrary, they strive to be more aggressive in the game. It isn’t uncommon to see a player come back after recovering from injuries. Interestingly such players come back more diligent and end up even playing better than they had before.
Real gentlemen are never embarrassed because they believe in themselves. Rugby, a gentlemans game requires such strong confidence in their players. Can you imagine being tackled in front of so many eyes? Maybe your son who thinks dad is the strongest man there is. A rugby player may be tackled but will always be relentless in pursue of scoring a try. If it means being tackled again, the player will take the tackle without any second thoughts. Such bravery is not easy to find as the number of real gentlemen in these days of hypocrites is diminishing at an alarming rate. It takes a gentleman to play rugby.
We must always be ready to learn. Learning requires us to be humble. Humbleness is a quality that all gentlemen possess. Being a gentleman is all about having the heart to be open to criticism and not having any hard feelings for the same. This allows us to be able to learn from our mistakes. Rugby, a gentlemans game is a popular target for critics who say that rugby players may suffer from chronic physical complications due to the nature of the game. However rugby players see to it that they rectify the areas that have problems in their game and this has resulted in the game being what it is today.
