LONG BEACH, CA—Returning from a strong, but cold weekend in Houston for the Coca Cola Classic, the No. 17-ranked Dirtbags welcomed the University Illinois-Chicago Flames Friday night for a three-game series at Blair Field.
Jered Hughes (3-0) pitched eight scoreless innings Friday against the Flames before tiring in the ninth, allowing three runs on a total of only five hits to earn the win. Hughes struck out nine UIC batters and walked none over eight and one-third.
The first seven batters in the Dirtbag lineup all had at least one hit. Freshman Danny Espinosa had two hits and Sophomore Brandon Godfrey had two RBIs.
UIC managed to keep Long Beach scoreless until the fourth when Espinosa, Evan Longoria and Godfrey all had singles to lead off the inning—Godfrey’s drove in Espinosa and Tom Wolf drove in Longoria with a ground out at first. Shane Peterson followed with a walk and stolen base, but Chuck Sindlinger flied out to center to end the inning, leaving runners on second and third.

LONG BEACH, CA — No. 16-ranked Long Beach State started their season off strong this past weekend sweeping the three-game series against the No. 17-ranked USC Trojans.
Jered Hughes took the mound for the Dirtbags Friday night. After a shaky, two-run first inning Hughes showed great control by retiring 12 batters in a row, holding the Trojans to only two runs and three hits for six innings.
Trojan ace and All-American Ian Kennedy fought back by striking out seven Dirtbags and giving up only five hits. Two of his three earned runs came in due to a thick fog that seemed to linger just long enough to allow LBSU two seemingly routine pop-ups to shallow right that were impossible for the Trojan fielders to see.
Robert Perry added a fourth run in the seventh with a RBI single, driving in senior Chuck Sindlinger from second base.
Blair Field hosted 3,189 fans Friday night—the largest regular season crowd in LBSU history and the second-largest overall.
